Jens Hanson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of the company called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.”

The army listed Hanson as living in Onalaska, La Crosse County, WI and age 45. He enlisted for three years on October 23, 1861 at La Crosse, and mustered on December 1, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He was left sick in hospital at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on June 11, 1862. He was discharged from the service at Jacinto, MS on account of disability on August 6, 1862.

After the war, he moved back to La Crosse County. He and his wife, Mary, had 4 children. By 1900, only 2 were still living, including Knute (1856). Mary was living with Knute at the time of the 1900 Census, as Jens died before 1890.
