Halvor A. Lee was born “Halvor Aslaksen Lie” on October 22, 1842 at Nord-Aurland, Oppland, Norway, the son of Aslak Olsen Lie and Marit Knudsdatter Dølve. He immigrated with his family in 1848.
He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company D. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Wolf Hunters.” They were also known as the “Waupun Company” because so many of its members were from Waupun. The army listed Lee as living in Mt. Horeb, Dane County, WI, age 20, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on January 14, 1862, at Mt. Horeb, and mustered at Madison, WI, on January 27, 1862, as a Private (Menig). He was promoted to Corporal (Korporal) on December 1, 1862. Lee became unfit for service and was discharged at Murfreesboro, TN, on March 2, 1863. Halvor was a brother of soldier Ole A. Lee, who was killed at Stones River.
After the war, he married Isabell Johnson circa 1865. They lived in Modena, Buffalo County, WI, until at least 1905. They then relocated to Minneapolis, Hennepin County, MN. Together, they had 11 children, including: Mary Huset (1868), Albert O. (1870), Ottis (1873), Anna M. (1876), Henry O. (1878), John (1881), Carl (1885), Helmer (1888), and Ida Foss (1893). Isabell died on March 2, 1926 and Halvor on June 22, 1932. They are both buried in Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis.
