Torgrim Mickelson was born in Hedalen, Valders, Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.
The army listed Mickelson as living in Black Earth, Dane County, WI, age 26, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 17, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on November 20, 1861 as a Corporal (Korporal). His brother, Ole Mikkelson, also served. Torgrim was killed in the Battle at Stones River, TN on December 31, 1862. He was buried in National Cemetery there; section H, grave 97.
