Gards-og Ættesoge for Luster Kommune

Since 1980, Lars E. Øyane has been working on writing the farm and family history of Luster kommune, which also includes the former kommuner of Jostedal and Hafslo.  Luster is considered the largest kommune in Sogn og Fjordane, with approximately 1,679 square miles, and is also considered to be one of the Norwegian kommuner to have the largest number of people moving outside its community limits, including both emigrants who went to America, as well as those who migrated to destinations within Norway.  Øyane’s work has resulted in seven volumes published between 1984 and 2007; with an eighth volume expected to be published shortly.

The Gards- og Ættesoge for Luster Kommune series give a complete description of all the 211 farm-units with all the subdivisions, as well as genealogical information on all of the families connected to any of these farms, as far back as they can be reliably traced.  All those who immigrated from Luster to America are mentioned in these books, with such information as their date of birth, date of death, residence, profession, place and date of marriage, name of spouse; and the names of their children.  It is estimated that during the years 1838-1930, Luster provided over 6,500 immigrants to the United States, totaling over 200,000 descendants in the United States today.  Each hardcover volume contains approximately 900 pages and each covers a different section of Luster kommune.
