Gulbrand Olson was born on May 29, 1824. He married Martha G. before the war at an unknown date. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company K. The company called itself “Clausen’s Guards” in honor of the 15th’s first Chaplain, Claus L. Clausen. Most of the company was recruited from Scandinavian communities in MN and IA, with the rest from WI.

The army listed Olson as living in Freeborn County, MN, age 35, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on January 18, 1862 in Freeborn County and mustered at Madison, WI on February 11, 1862 as a Private (Menig). Olson was sick in Murfreesboro, TN on May 21, 1863. On May 27, 1864, he was wounded in his right arm at New Hope Church, GA. Olson was discharged from the service for disability due to his wound at Harvey Hospital in Madison, WI on November 28, 1864.

After the war, Olson was awarded a pension of $2.67 per month for the wound in his right arm. He worked as a farmer. He and Martha had 9 children, 7 of whom were still living in 1900. They included: Ole (1861), Severine (1862), Gutorm (1864), Edward (1866), Maria (1869), Julia (1871), Ada (1875), John (1880), and Theodore (1882).

He died on July 30, 1922 and was buried in Hartland Village cemetery, Freeborn County, MN. Martha was buried in the same cemetery.
