Gunder Olson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.

The army listed him as living in Stoughton, Dane County, WI, born in Risor, Norway, age 18, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on September 20, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on November 16, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was wounded and taken prisoner in Battle of Chickamauga, GA on September 19, 1863, and died of his wounds in, or on the way to, Atlanta on September 21, 1863. His father, Ole Olson Sharpe, filed a pension in his name on March 14, 1879.
