Kittel Olsen was born on the Frosteli farm, Nissedal parish, Telemark. He left the parish April 8, 1861 with his parents and younger siblings, to come to America.
Kittel Olson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of Company E called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.”
The army listed him as living in Ridgeway, Iowa County, WI, age 18, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on January 16, 1862 in Dane County, and mustered on January 18, 1862 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He was left sick in a hospital at Union City, TN on June 20, 1862. He was sick with dysentery at Stevenson, AL on September 9, 1863 and died there on October 10, 1863. After the war, his mother, Dordi Kittleson, filed a pension in his name.
