Knud Olson joined the WI 15th Infantry. Company A. The men of the company called themselves the “St. Olaf’s Rifles.” They were also known as the “Sailor Company” because of the large number of seamen in its ranks, and as the “Chicago Company” because so many of its members were residents of that city.
The army listed him as living in Pleasant Springs, Dane County, WI and age 36. He enlisted for three years on January 16, 1864 at Pleasant Springs, and mustered on January 1864 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). As a recruit, he joined Company A at McDonald’s Station on April 23, 1864. Olson was shot through his left hand at Resaca, GA on May 14, 1864 and sent to a hospital in Nashville, TN. He was transferred to Company H at Whiteside, TN on December 20, 1864. Olson was then sick in Huntsville, AL on March 3, 1865. On June 10, 1865, he was transferred to I Company of 13th Infantry, and then mustered out because of sickness.
