Marthin Olson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted.
The army listed him as living in Mt. Morris, Waushara County, WI, born in Norway, a farmer, age 35, and married. He had blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, and stood 5’6”. He enlisted for one year on September 30, 1864 at Berlin, WI, and mustered at Madison, WI on October 4, 1864 as a Private (Menig). He had a bounty of $100. Olson joined Company I at Whiteside, TN on December 29, 1864; temporarily assigned to the WI 24th Infantry; and transferred to I Company of the WI 13th on June 10, 1865. He mustered out July 24, 1865.
After the war, Olson lived with his wife, Martha, and their children in Spring Water, Waushara County, WI. Together, they had at least three children, including Amy (1863), Ole B. (1864), and Anon (1867). He worked as a farmer. In 1899, Olson died and was buried as Mads Olson in Mount Morris Holden Lutheran Cemetery, Mount Morris, Waushara County, WI. His wife died in December 21, 1905 and is buried in the same cemetery.
