Tidemand was born at Klemetsrud, Hedal, Sør-Aurdal, Oppland and left the parish March 27, 1857, with his parents and siblings.  He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.

The army listed him as living in Black Earth, Vermont Township, Dane County, WI, age 22, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 15, 1861, at Madison, WI, and mustered there on November 16, 1861, as a Private (Menig). Olson was wounded by accident at Bird’s Point, MO. He was discharged as unfit for service in Jacinto, MS, on August 7, 1862.

After the war,  he lived in Buena Vista County, IA, where he married Ragnild.  Their children were:  Ole Johan/Johan T (1877-1961), Alfred (1878-1935), Karl Julius/Julius C (1880-1964), Anne Kristine (1882-1958), Olava Beata (1884-1884), Inga Olava (1885-1969),  George (1888-1889), and Henry (1888-1888). By 1900 the family had moved to Polk Co., MN.  Tedeman died there and is buried in the First English Lutheran Cemetery, Mentor.
