Berendt Christian Osmundsen was born in Avaldsnes parish, Norway, and left the parish for America with his family in 1853. In 1860, they were living in Norway, Racine County, WI.. His brother Jeremiah, who also served in C Company.

Osmundsen joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company C. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Bear Hunters,” but they were also known as the Color Company because the regimental Color Guard was attached to their company.

The army listed him as living in Norway Township, Racine County, WI, a sailor, and age 19. He enlisted for three years on August 30, 1862, at Milwaukee, and mustered at Madison, WI, the day after as a Private (Menig). He was seriously wounded at Stones River, TN, on December 31, 1862. On January 9, 1863, he died of his wounds in a hospital at Murfreesboro, TN. In 1879, his mother, Anna, filed a pension in his name.
