Ellef Pederson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company A. The men of the company called themselves the “St. Olaf’s Rifles.” They were also known as the “Sailor Company” because of the large number of seamen in its ranks, and as the “Chicago Company” because so many of its members were residents of that city.
The army listed him as living in Chicago, IL, age 29, and unmarried. He enlisted on October 11, 1861 and mustered on November 15, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). Pederson transferred from Company I on April 7, 1862. He was sick in hospital in Mound City, IL in 1862. He was given leave from there on June 3, 1862. Pederson was sick in hospital at Bowling Green on September 17, 1862. On July 28, 1863, he was discharged from the service in Louisville, KY for disability.
After the war, in 1900 he was admitted to the Old Soldiers’s Home in Wood, Washington, WI. It was recorded that he didn’t have any of the fingers on his hands. He had rheumatism and debility of age. In the past, he worked as a fisherman and lived in Marionette, WI. He was a widower by the time he was admitted.
