William W. Perkins joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.
The army listed him as living in Westport, Dane County, WI, age 44, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on November 16, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on the same day as a Private (Menig) and Musician. Perkins was sick in the hospital at Bowling Green, KY in September 1862. He was discharged from there on January 9, 1863 for disease.
