Alexander Redan joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company G. The men of the company called themselves the “Rock River Rangers.”
He enlisted for three years on March 2, 1863 at Mississippi River Island No. 10, and mustered there as a Negro Private (Menig) and Company undercook. Redan was taken prisoner at Chattanooga, TN on November 20, 1863. He transferred to Company H at Whiteside, TN and then temporarily assigned to the WI 24th Infantry. Redan was given 30 days sick leave and did not return. He was listed as deserted on March 25, 1865.
