Harden Rossing joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.

 The army listed him as living in Christiana, Dane County, WI, age 49, and married. He enlisted for three years on November 13, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on November 20, 1861 as a Private (Menig). Rossing was sick in Bowling Green, KY on November 4, 1862. He was assigned to military police duty with the brigade on 12th and 17th of June 1863. On September 11, 1863, he transferred to Veteran Reserve Corp. Rossing was discharged from the service from Bowling Green for disability on January 9, 1864.
