Ole H. Rust was born on September 14, 1834. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted.
The army listed him as living in Mitchell, Mitchell County, IA, but he may have lived in MN near this border town. He was 26 years old and unmarried. Rust enlisted for three years on February 18, 1862 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on March 3, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He was sick in Louisville, KY from September 10-12, 1863 and then sick again in Chattanooga, TN on July 4, 1864. He was assigned to the WI 24th Infantry on February 10, 1865. Rust was discharged from the service at Huntsville, AL on March 13, 1865, his term of service having expired.
In 1880, Ole was single, a farmer, and living in Newburg, Mitchell, IA. In 1910, he was living with his brother Claus. He died on April 19, 1912 and buried at St. Ansgar, IA.
