Mathias Schioll was born “Mathias Schjøll” in Toten, Norway. He joined K Company of the WI 3rd Infantry. The army listed him as living in Coon Prairie, La Crosse County, WI, a farmer. unmarried. and age 40. He had blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion, and stood 5’6”. He enlisted with the company for three years on April 20, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered on June 29, 1861 at Fond du Lac, WI as a Private (Menig). Discharged from the service on April 15, 1863 by order of General Slocum. Almost a year later, he enlisted again for three years on April 4, 1864 at La Crosse as a Veteran recruit. He mustered there the same day as a Private. He came to WI 15th Infantry, Company B at Dallas on May 15, 1864 and transferred to Company H on December 1, 1864. He was assigned temporarily to the 24th Infantry and then transferred to I Company of the WI 13th Infantry on June 10, 1865. He mustered out at San Antonio, TX on November 24, 1865.
After the war, Mathias married Sigrid. She filed a pension as his widow in 1896. He died at Stoddard, WI.
