Aslak Seversen Rishoud was born June 26, 1844 at Rishoud, Krödsherad, Sigdal, Norway, the son of Sjur (Syver) Asleson Rishoud and Helge Gundersdatter Rodningen. They immigrated to IL in 1849 and came to Winneshiek County in 1851.
Aslak Siverson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company H. The men of the company called themselves “Heg’s Rifles” in honor of the 15th commander, Colonel Hans C. Heg. They were also known as the “Voss Company” because of a large number of them who were from the Voss region of Norway.
The army listed him as living in Decorah, Winneshiek County, IA, age 18, and unmarried. He had blue eyes, dark hair, dark complexion, and stood 5’7”. He enlisted for three years on January 6, 1862 at La Crosse, WI, and mustered on February 13, 1862 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). While at Murfreesboro, TN, he developed rheumatism in his right shoulder. He was with the provisions transport from Stefenson, AL in October 1863. Siverson was sick in Chattanooga, TN on November 28, 1863. He mustered out with Company H on February 13, 1865 at Chattanooga, TN. July 26, 1873, he married to Bertha Tobiasen at Luther College, Decorah, by Rev. N. Brandt. They had twelve children. He farmed in Canoe Township, Winneshiek County. They lived in Canoe Township; he was postmaster at Springwater, IA. He died on October 27, 1930, age 86. He was buried at Big Canoe Lutheran Cemetery near Decorah.
