Olaus Solberg was born in Norway on January 20, 1813. He married Karen Nielsdatter in Denmark on May 20, 1841. Before the war began, he was living in MN with his wife.
Olaus joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company K. The company called itself “Clausen’s Guards” in honor of the 15th’s first Chaplain, Claus L. Clausen. Most of the company was recruited from Scandinavian communities in MN and IA, with the rest from WI.
The army listed him as living in Bath Township, Freeborn County, MN, age 49, and married to a woman named Caroline. He enlisted for three years on November 25, 1861, in Freeborn County. Solberg was commissioned Second Lieutenant (Løytnant) on January 30, 1862. On February 11, 1862, he mustered at Madison, WI. He resigned on May 7, 1862, at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on special order No. 154 from General Halleck.
After the war, he worked as a farmer living in Butternut Valley, Blue Earth, MN.
