Nils Storkson was born at Tysnæs, Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted.
The army listed him as living in Norway Grove, Dane County, WI, age 31 and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on November 16, 1861 at Madison, WI and mustered there the same day as a Private (Menig). He was with the provisions transport from Stevenson, AL in October 1863. On June 21, 1864, he was wounded in his head at Kennesaw Mountain, GA. He mustered out with Company I on February 10, 1865 at Chattanooga, TN.
After the war in 1870, he was living in Adams, Mower County, MN with his wife, Christi (born about 1826 in Norway) and their child Nicoline (1867). By 1880, they had 5 more children: Steven (1868), Ole (1870), Severd (1873), Bertha (1875), and Henry (1879). They eventually moved to Grand Forks County, ND where he died in 1883.
