Jakob Syvertson was born in Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company A as a Private (Menig). The men of the company called themselves the “St. Olaf’s Rifles”. They were also known as the “Sailor Company” because of the large number of seamen in its ranks, and as the “Chicago Company” because so many of its members were residents of that city.
Syvertson was listed as being 27 years of age and a farmer. He had blue eyes, auburn hair, fair complexion, and stood 5’10”. He enlisted for three years on December 26, 1861 at Madison, WI and mustered there on January 11, 1862. He was a Private (Menig) and served as a smith with the quartermaster in Chattanooga. The army listed him as living in Madison, WI. He was killed in action at the Battle of New Hope Church, GA on May 27, 1864.
