Lewis Thompson was born “Lasse Guttormsen Bø” on December 25, 1842 at Vik, Sogn, Norway. He came to Boone County, IL with his mother and siblings in 1855. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company A. The men of the company called themselves the “St. Olaf’s Rifles.” They were also known as the “Sailor Company” because of the large number of seamen in its ranks, and as the “Chicago Company” because so many of its members were residents of that city.

The army listed him as living in Boone County, IL, age 19, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 16, 1861 in Bad Ax County, WI and mustered at Madison, WI on November 15, 1861 as a Private (Menig). Thompson died of disease at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on May 7, 1862 and was buried in Mississippi River National Cemetery, Memphis, TN.
