Albert A. Tofte was born in Bergen, Norway on August 7, 1841 to Niels Asbjørnsen Tofte and Elisabeth Bergithe Jørgensen. He immigrated in 1859 and settled in Stoughton, Dane County, WI. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.
The army listed him as living in Fisher,Polk County, MN. Tofte served under another name, not yet uncovered. He served as a Sergeant (Sersjant), was wounded and taken prisoner at Murfreesboro (Battle of Stones River), TN and sent to Libby Prison at Richmond, VA.
After the war, Albert married Ingeborg Westlund on May 16, 1873. They were childless. They lived in Fisher, MN. He worked as a druggist.
