Georg Wagoner was born on Lake Ontario. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company A. The men of the company called themselves the “St. Olaf’s Rifles.” They were also known as the “Sailor Company” because of the large number of seamen in its ranks, and as the “Chicago Company” because so many of its members were residents of that city.
The army listed him as living in Chicago, IL, age 28, unmarried, and a sailor. He had brown eyes, black hair, fair complexion, and 6’1”. He enlisted for three years on Oct 26, 1861 at Chicago and mustered on November 15, 1861 at Madison, WI as Private (Menig). He was assigned as Wagoner. On March 3, 1862, he was missing from Regiment on the way from Springfield, IL to St. Louis, MO. He was listed as a deserter and was never mustered out.
