Peter Walin was born in Sweden. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.

The army listed him as living in Fox Lake, Dodge County, WI, age 27, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on November 15, 1861 at Madison, WI and mustered there on November 16, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was promoted to Corporal (Korporal). On May 1, 1863, he was absent sick since and believed sent to Convalescent Center at Leiren at Murfreesboro, TN on May 7, 1863. He remained sick until May 29, 1863. He transferred to Veteran Reserve Corps on November 1, 1863 and then mustered out at New Albany, IN on November 22, 1864 at expiration of his term.
