Edwin W. Wheeler was born August 1833 in England. He immigrated in 1842. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company C. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Bear Hunters,” but they were also known as the Color Company because the regimental Color Guard was attached to their company.
The army listed him as living in Waterford, Racine County, WI, age 29, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 25, 1861 at Waterford and mustered at Madison, WI on December 2, 1861 as a Corporal (Korporal). He was absent from the company, serving as a butcher with Captain Fourke on September 1, 1863. On November 28, 1863 he was sick in Chattanooga, TN. He was then wounded at Resaca, GA on May 14, 1864. He mustered out on January 1, 1865 at Chattanooga, TN.
After the war, he moved back to Racine County, WI. He married Jorene Maria Stinsby on May 20, 1866. Maria was born in 1848 in Norway. Their son George was born in 1869 and Carrie M. in 1876. In 1870, they were living in Pewaukee, Waukesha County, WI. In 1900, he was living with his daughter’s family in Center Creek, Martin County, MN. He was working as a farm laborer. In 1910, he was living in the same place. He died 1922.
