Lewis J. Wright was born on October 25, 1844 to Sylvester Wright and Hannah Compton in Summit, OH. In 1850, he was living with his parents and siblings in Trumbull, Ashtabula County, OH. In 1860, the family was living in Roscoe, Winnebago County, IL. His siblings were Jenevra (1849), Lydia (1842), Sara (1855), and Celic (1848).
He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company G. The men of the company called themselves the “Rock River Rangers.”
His is listed as living in Beloit, Rock County, WI, 18 years of age and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on January 2, 1862 at Beloit and mustered at Madison, WI on January 5, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He was given leave on June 11, 1863. He was promoted to Corporal (Korporal). He was with the provision transport from Stevenson, AL in October 1863. Wright was sick in Nashville, TN on Janurary 23, 1864. He was promoted to Sergeant on April 25, 1864. He was sick in Evansville in May 1864. Mustered out with Company G at Chattanooga, TN on January 13, 1865.
After the war, her married Mary W. Van Nostrand on September 23, 1865 in Black River Falls, Jackson, WI. Her parents were Isaac and Marcy Van Nostrand.
