Ole Anderson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.

The army listed Anderson as living in Dunkirk, Dane County, WI and age 38. He enlisted for three years on December 28, 1863 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on January 28, 1864 as a Private (Menig) and recruit. He joined the company at McDonald’s Station, TN. He then transferred to Company H on December 1, 1864; then to 24th Infantry; and later to I Company in the 13th Infantry.
