Jabus Barr was born to Henry and Abigail Barr. His siblings were William (1841), John (1847), Henry (1850), and Jerremiah (1852). In 1860, he was working as a laborer.
Jabus joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company D. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Wolf Hunters.” They were also known as the “Waupun Company” because so many of its members were from Waupun.
The army listed Barr as living in Bloomfield, Walworth County, WI, age 19, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on November 17, 1861 at Berlin, WI, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 8, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was sick in Bowling Green, KY on November 4, 1862; sick in Knoxville, TN on February 15, 1864; sick in Chattanooga, TN; sick in Keokuk, IA since January 15, 1864; and sick in Madison, WI where he was mustered out on December 12, 1864. He had a bounty due him of $100.
