Herman Berg joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company C. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Bear Hunters,” but they were also known as the Color Company because the regimental Color Guard was attached to their company.
The army listed Berg as living in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, WI, age 22, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on December 2, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on January 10, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He was sick in Springfield, KY on October 7, 1862. He was in the hospital at Bowling Green, KY. He was taken prisoner near Bardstown, KY where he had been left behind because of his illness. He was paroled to General Lew Wallace at a camp in OH in 1863. He served on the military police duty in Columbus, OH on the 1st, 4th and 11th of April 1863. He then transferred to Veteran Reserve Corps on January 15, 1864. He was later discharged.
