Fredrik Bertelson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company A. The men of the company called themselves the “St. Olaf’s Rifles.” They were also known as the “Sailor Company” because of the large number of seamen in its ranks, and as the “Chicago Company” because so many of its members were residents of that city.
The army listed Bertelson as living in Chicago, Cook County, IL, age 30, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on December 9, 1861 at Chicago, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 18, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was sick in the hospital at Lebanon, KY since October 27, 1862. He died of disease in a hospital at Louisville, KY on November 9, 1862. He was buried at Cave Hill National Cemetery, Louisville, KY in section 13, row 3, grave 8.
