John Bornum joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company G. The men of the company called themselves the “Rock River Rangers.”

The army listed Bornum as living in Madison, Dane County, WI, married, and age 30. He enlisted for three years on December 18, 1861 at Madison, and mustered there as a Private (Menig). He was left sick in Louisville, KY on September 12, 1863. He was seriously wounded in his left shoulder at New Hope Church, GA on May 27, 1864 and died of his wounds at a hospital in Chattanooga, TN on June 24, 1864. He was buried in the National Cemetery at Chattanooga; section E, grave 122.
