Peter Brekken joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company A. The men of the company called themselves the “St. Olaf’s Rifles.” They were also known as the “Sailor Company” because of the large number of seamen in its ranks, and as the “Chicago Company” because so many of its members were residents of that city.
The army listed Brekken as living in Chicago, IL, age 22, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 8, 1861 at Chicago, and mustered on November 15, 1861 in Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He was absent sick in hospital in Chattanooga, TN since September 25, 1863. He was then absent sick in Knoxville, TN since January 24, 1864 and again on July 20, 1864. Brekken mustered out with the company at Chattanooga, TN on December 20, 1864.
From 1865, he served in the Navy on the Great Western and the Kate. In 1890, he filed a pension by himself in 1890 in CO.
