He enlisted for three years on October 8, 1861 at Chicago, and mustered on November 15, 1861 in Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He was absent sick in hospital in Chattanooga, TN since September 25, 1863. He was then absent sick in Knoxville, TN since January 24, 1864 and again on July 20, 1864.
