Anfind Josephsen was born on the Grovu farm, Voss parish, Hordaland, Norway. He arrived in New York July 13, 1850 with his parents, siblings, grandparents and uncles on the Kong Sverre.
He enlisted as Albert J. Brown, joining the WI 15th Infantry, Company G. The men of the company called themselves the “Rock River Rangers.” His uncle, Andrew A. Brown served in Company H.
The army listed Brown as living in Beloit, Rock County, WI, age 20, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 5, 1861 at Beloit, and mustered at Madison, WI, on December 13, 1861, as a Private (Menig). He was on leave to Beloit on July 3, 1863. He was sick in Chattanooga, TN, on November 28, 1863. He mustered out with Company G on January 13, 1865, at Chattanooga.
