Anders J. Burke was born “Anders Bjørke” in Sogn, Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.
The army listed Burke as living in Koshkonong, Jefferson County, WI, age 26, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on February 8, 1862 at Madison, WI, and mustered there the same day as a Private (Menig). He was in a Convalescent Hospital in Murfreesboro, TN on May 7, 1863. He was transferred while at Murfreesboro to the Invalid Corps on October 4, 1863 under the name of “Andrew Burry”. He mustered out on February 8, 1865 from G Company of the 11th Regiment of the Veterans Reserve Corps.
After the war, he was living with his wife, Kari, and his children: Sophie (1870), George (1871), Johan (1873), Alfred (1874), Clara (1866), Oline (1878), and Georgine (1880). He worked as a farmer and living in Urness, Douglas County, MN. In 1893, he was still living in Urness.
