Gulbran Christianson was born in Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company H. The men of the company called themselves “Heg’s Rifles” in honor of the 15th commander, Colonel Hans C. Heg. They were also known as the “Voss Company” because of a large number of them who were from the Voss region of Norway.
The army listed Christianson as living in Clermont, Fayette County, IA, a farmer, age 19, and unmarried. He had blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, and stood 5’9”. He enlisted for three years on January 22, 1862 at Clermont, and mustered at Madison, WI on February 13, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He was several times sick at various hospitals. Christianson was killed in action, a gunshot through his head, while on the skirmish line before Atlanta, GA on August 2, 1864. He was buried in National Cemetery at Marietta, GA, section C, grave 718.
