Ole Colby was born on October 30, 1839 in Krøsherad, Sigdal, Buskerud, Norway. His parents were Asle Colbjornsen Redalen and Christie Eriksdatter. He immigrated in 1848.

In 1860, he was living with his mother and siblings Christi (1846) and Mary (1853). His other siblings were Guro, Guri, Colbjorn, and Erick.

Colbjornson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company G. The men of the company called themselves the “Rock River Rangers.”

The army listed him as living in Primrose, Dane County, WI, age 21, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on January 3, 1862 at Primrose, and mustered at Madison, WI on January 5, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He was a hospital steward for a time. He mustered out with Company G on January 13, 1865 at Chattanooga, TN.

After the war, he married Gunbjor on November 19, 1865 in Blue Mounds, Dane County, WI. They moved to IA and opened a general store in Huxley. Their children include Harold, Emma, Christena, and an unnamed baby. Colby died on March 14, 1875 in Huxley, Story County, IA. He is buried in Fjeldberg Cemetery in Huxley. Gunbjor moved back to WI and died on September 25, 1916 in McFarland, Dane County, WI. She was buried in Lower McFarland Cemetery.
