David Crockett was born in Huntsville, AL, in 1833. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of the company called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.”

The army listed him as a “Negro” servant, age 30. He had brown eyes, curly hair, dark complexion, and stood 5’6”. He sought out Lieutenant Rossing, seeking to enlist. He enlisted for three years on October 10, 1863, at Chattanooga, TN, and mustered on November 19, 1863, at the Cumberland Army’s headquarters. Crockett was assigned as company undercook and Private (Menig). He was sent to hospital at Atlanta, GA, on September 28, 1864. He was transferred to Company H at Whiteside, TN, in Sep 1864; later to the 24th Infantry on February 13, 1865.
