Jefferson Thom Davis was born in Davidson County, TN. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company A. The men of the company called themselves the “St. Olaf’s Rifles.” They were also known as the “Sailor Company” because of the large number of seamen in its ranks, and as the “Chicago Company” because so many of its members were residents of that city.
The army listed him as a “Negro” servant, age 22. He had black eyes, black hair, black complexion, and stood 5’5”. He enlisted for three years on March 10, 1863 at Murfreesboro, TN, and mustered on April 20, 1863 at McDonalds Station, TN as a Private (Menig) and undercook. He was transferred many times: to Company H at Whiteside, TN on December 20, 1864; to K Company of the WI 13th Infantry; to WI 24th on February 13, 1865; then to I Company of the WI 13th on June 10, 1865.
