Helge C. Ellingboe was born in Vang, Oppland, Norway on February 16, 1840. His parents were Christopher Helgesen Ellingboe and Berit Andersdatter. They immigrated to the U.S. in 1852.
When the war began, Ellingboe joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company F. The men of the company called themselves “KK’s Protectors” in honor of the 15th’s first Lieutenant Colonel, Kiler K. Jones. “F” was also known as the Valdres Company because a large number of its members hailed from the Valdres region of Norway.
The army listed him as living in Manitowoc County, WI, unmarried, and age 20. He had blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, and stood 5’5”. He enlisted for three years on November 8, 1861 at Manitowoc, WI, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 12, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was sick at Mississippi Island No. 10 on June 11, 1862. He became unfit for service and was discharged from the service for sickness on October 13, 1862 at Cincinnati, OH. He enlisted again for one year on September 20, 1864 at Manitowoc. He mustered on October 8, 1864 at Madison, WI as a recruit. He had a bounty of $100 and served as a Private (Menig). This time he joined WI 27th Infantry Co. K from the recruiting depot on November 7, 1864. He mustered out at Clarksville, TX on July 14, 1865.
After the war, he settled in Gibson, Manitowoc County, WI and married Ingeborg (Emma) Thomson in 1871. Together, they had 13 children: Christoph (1873), Thomas (1875), Knud (1876), Anders (1878), Anne (1879), Gilbert (1882), Christ (1884), Oscar (1885), Walter (1887), Clara (1892), Edward (1890), Edward (1894), and Eleonora (1896). The first Christopher and first Edward both died young.
