William Elliot was born in Ireland. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company C. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Bear Hunters,” but they were also known as the Color Company because the regimental Color Guard was attached to their company.
The army listed Elliot as living in Muskego Center, Waukesha County, WI, age 24, unmarried, and a farmer. He had dark eyes, black hair, dark complexion, and stood 5’10”. He enlisted for three years on December 28, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on January 10, 1862 as a Corporal (Korporal). He was detained by civil authorities in Waukesha, WI on February 1, 1862. The Sheriff of Waukesha County subsequently reported him pardoned on March 25, 1862. He was reduced to Private (Menig) on May 15, 1862. He rejoined the 15th Regiment at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on June 4, 1862. He was taken prisoner at La Vergne, TN on December 29, 1862 and sent to St. Louis to be exchanged. His parole was declared invalid, and he was sent to his company at Murfreesboro, TN on January 13, 1863. He was promoted to Corporal (Korporal) again. Elliot mustered out with C Company on January 1, 1865 at Chattanooga, TN.
