Andrew Larsen Fosse was born in Voss, Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company H.  The men of his company called themselves “Heg’s Rifles” in honor of the 15th commander, Colonel Hans C. Heg. They were also known as the “Voss Company” because of a large number of them who were from the Voss region of Norway. His brothers, Ole L. Fosse and Stephen L. Fosse, also joined Company H.

The army listed Fosse as living in Deerfield, Dane County, WI, farmer, unmarried, and age 26. He had blue eyes, dark hair, fair complexion, and stood 5’8”. He enlisted for three years on October 17, 1861, at Cambridge, WI, and mustered at Madison, WI, on February 13, 1862, as a Corporal (Korporal). He was killed in the Battle of Stones River, TN, on December 31, 1862. He was buried in the National Cemetery there; section C, grave 36.

Fosse was named Brevet Captain on April 4, 1862, with rank from December 31, 1862, for courage and bravery displayed during the battle. “He fought with courage despite being seriously wounded in his right leg, and he maintained his position, fighting courageously until he fell down dead, his heart pierced through by a bullet.”
