John H. Fostad joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.

The army listed Fostad as living in Stoughton, Dane County, WI, age 23, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 26, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on November 16, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He died of disease in the hospital at Nashville, TN on November 25, 1862. One muster out roll shows his death date as December 23, 1862. He was buried in the cemetery at Nashville in section B, grave 314.
