Dreng Gunderson was born in Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted.
The army listed Gunderson was a farmer and age 31. He had blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, and stood 5’10”. He enlisted for three years on November 20, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on November 28, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He died at General Hospital No. 5 in Knoxville, TN on February 4, 1864 of chronic diarrhea.
