John Gysler joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company A. The men of the company called themselves the “St. Olaf’s Rifles.” They were also known as the “Sailor Company” because of the large number of seamen in its ranks, and as the “Chicago Company” because so many of its members were residents of that city.
The army listed Gysler as living in Chicago, IL and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on September 25, 1861 at Chicago, and mustered on November 15, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He transferred from Company A to Regimental Headquarters, near Murfreesboro, TN, on September 1, 1862 and appointed Regimental Commissary Sergeant (Sersjant). Gysler was sent to hospital at Nashville, TN on August 7, 1863. He was was reported to have been absent sick on February 24, 1864 as well. He was demoted to ranks on December 1, 1864 by the order of Lt. Col. Ole Johnson, reason not given. He mustered out with Company A on December 20, 1864.
In 1885, he filed a pension from MN.
