Edwin Hadley was born “Even Hadlesen Fjøsne” on April 29, 1843 at Etne, Hordaland, Norway. Edwin was the son of Hadle Evensen Testdal and Anne Marie Johansdatter Fjøsne. He, his parents and brother, Johan, came to America on “Kong Sverre”, which sailed from Bergen and reached NY on June 24 or 29, 1846. They came to Perry Township, Dane County, WI in 1854. Edwin’s mother died in 1861.
Hadley joined WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of the company called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.” The army listed Hadley as living in Perry Township, age 19, and unmarried. He had blue eyes, dark hair, light complexion, and stood 5’7”. He enlisted for three years on October 18, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on June 11, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He was promoted to Corporal (Korporal) on November 1, 1862. He was on police duty on December 20, 1862. Hadley was left sick in Knoxville, TN on February 24, 1863. He was on escort duty with the provision transport from Stevenson, AL on October 13, 1863. He was sick in Chattanooga, TN on November 28, 1863, and again on Nashville, TN in February 1864. He was killed in Battle of New Hope Church, GA on May 27, 1864 by a gunshot through his heart.
