Guttorm Halvorson was born on June 23, 1813 in Valders or Ringerike, Norway. He married Kirsti and they had several children, including Halvor (1854), Knut (1856), and Jurigana (1858).
He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company D. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Wolf Hunters.” They were also known as the “Waupun Company” because so many of its members were from Waupun.
The army listed Halvorson as living in Moscow, Iowa County, WI, age 48, and married. He enlisted for three years on January 25, 1862 at Moscow, and mustered at Madison, WI on February 13, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He became unfit for service and was discharged from the service from Mississippi River Island No. 10 on May 10, 1862.
After the war, Halvorson moved back to MN. He and his family lived in Audal, Otter Tail County, MN. He died on January 11, 1885 and is buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, MN. Kirsti filed a pension in his name in 1890. Kirsti lived until December 14, 1910 and is buried in Stravanger Lutheran Cemetery, Fergus Falls, MN.
