Andrew Hanson was born in December 1842 in Norway. He immigrated in 1860 and settled in Mt. Morris, WI.
Hanson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted.
The army listed Hanson as living in Mt. Morris, Waushara County, WI, age 19, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on January 14, 1862 at Camp Randall, Madison, WI, and mustered there on January 18, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He was discharged from the service for disease (consumption) at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on January 31, 1863. He was buried in Holden Cemetery, Mt. Morris.
After the war, Hanson married Mary and they lived in Mt. Morris. They had at least eight children: Carrie (1865), Lorenso (1867), Henritte (1870), Matilda (1872), Hanna (1874), Bernard (1876), Herman (1878), and Alice (1880). He was a farmer. Mary died before the 1900 Census. By then, Hanson was a boarder and working as a laborer.
