John Hanson was born in Tinn, Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company G. The men of the company called themselves the “Rock River Rangers.”
The army listed Hanson as living in Bellville, Dane County, WI, age 33, married, and a farmer. He had blue eyes, brown hair, dark complexion, and stood 6’. He enlisted for three years on October 15, 1861 at Bellville, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 8, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was on leave from Camp Randall, Madison on February 28, 1862 and did not return. He was listed as deserter.
