Ole Hanson was born in Denmark. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company C. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Bear Hunters,” but they were also known as the Color Company because the regimental Color Guard was attached to their company.

The army listed Hanson as living in Racine, Racine County, WI, age 29, a farmer, and unmarried. He had blue eyes, light hair, fair complexion, and stood 5’3”. He enlisted for three years on November 29, 1862 at Racine, and mustered on December 5, 1862 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He was an escort with the provision transport from Stevenson, AL on October 13, 1863. He transferred to Company H at Whiteside, TN on January 1, 1865; then temporarily assigned to the 24th Infantry; then transferred to K Company of the 13th on June 12, 1865. He mustered out on November 24, 1865 at San Antonio, TX.
